Silence & Solitude

What It Is

Silence and solitude are about stepping away from noise, hurry, and people to be alone with God. It’s creating space in your life to slow down, breathe, and simply be in His presence — not to do more, but to rest, listen, and let Him speak.

Jesus Himself practiced this often. Even in the busiest seasons of ministry, He withdrew to quiet places to pray and be with the Father (Luke 5:16). If He needed that time, so do we.

In a world that’s constantly loud and demanding our attention, silence and solitude help us tune out the noise so we can tune in to God’s voice.

Why It Matters

  • It helps us hear God more clearly. When we’re quiet, we’re more aware of His presence and guidance.

  • It restores our soul. Silence and solitude give space for rest, peace, and refreshment.

  • It recenters our hearts. It helps us remember who we are and what matters most.

  • It deepens our relationship with God. Like any close relationship, being together without distraction builds intimacy.

How to Practice Silence & Solitude

Here are simple ways to begin this practice:

Start Small — 10-30 Minutes

  • Find a quiet spot — your room, a park, a chair by the window — and leave your phone behind.

  • Sit in silence, breathe deeply, and invite God to be present.

  • You don’t have to say anything. Simply rest and listen.

Create a Daily “Quiet Space”

  • Set aside time each day — even just 10 minutes — to pause before God without multitasking.

  • You might read a short scripture and then sit quietly, asking God to speak to your heart.

Take a Mini Retreat

  • Spend a few hours or a whole day alone with God. Go somewhere peaceful — a park, a trail, a quiet room — and leave distractions behind.

  • Use the time to pray, journal, read Scripture, and listen. Don’t rush — let the stillness do its work.

Ask Reflective Questions

  • As you sit quietly, ask:

    • “Lord, is there anything You want to say to me?”

    • “What’s in my heart right now that I need to bring before You?”

  • Then be still and pay attention to what God stirs within you.

Tips for Staying Consistent

  • Start small — silence can feel uncomfortable at first, but it gets easier.

  • Turn off notifications and leave devices in another room.

  • Pair silence with nature — being outside often helps us slow down and listen.

  • Don’t worry about “doing it right.” The goal is simply to be with God.

Scriptures to Hold Onto

  • “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” – Luke 5:16

  • “Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10

  • “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength.” – Isaiah 30:15

Start Here:

  • Set a timer for 10 minutes this week. Sit in silence and simply invite God’s presence.

  • Take a walk alone without music or your phone — just talk and listen to God.

  • Schedule a half-day or full-day retreat once this month to rest and reconnect with Him.

Silence and solitude aren’t about escaping life — they’re about creating space to be fully present with the One who gives life. In the stillness, we discover that God is closer — and speaking — more than we realize.
