Prayer

What It Is

Prayer is simply talking with God — and listening, too. It’s how we build a real relationship with Him. Through prayer, we share our hearts, bring our needs, give thanks, and grow closer to the Father.

It’s not about using perfect words or following a strict formula. Prayer is about coming to God just as you are — honestly, regularly, and with faith that He hears you. Jesus often prayed (Mark 1:35), and He invites us to do the same so we can know His heart and see His power at work in our lives.

Why It Matters

  • It builds relationship. Like any friendship, closeness with God grows as we spend time together.

  • It brings peace. When we pray, we trade our worries for God’s presence and promises (Philippians 4:6-7).

  • It changes things. God moves through the prayers of His people (James 5:16).

  • It changes us. Prayer shapes our hearts to look more like Jesus.

How to Practice Prayer

Here are some simple ways to get started and build a habit:

Daily Conversation

  • Start and end your day with prayer. Tell God what’s on your heart, thank Him for His goodness, and ask for His help in the day ahead.

  • Talk to Him throughout the day — in the car, on a walk, at work. Nothing is too small to bring before Him.

Pray Scripture

  • Use verses to guide your prayers. For example, pray Psalm 23: “Lord, thank You for being my Shepherd. Lead me and guide me today.”

  • This helps keep your prayers focused and reminds you of God’s promises.

Use a Simple Framework (ACTS)

If you’re not sure what to say, try this structure:

  • Adoration – Praise God for who He is.

  • Confession – Admit where you’ve fallen short and ask for forgiveness.

  • Thanksgiving – Thank Him for what He’s done.

  • Supplication – Ask Him for what you need or pray for others.

Pray with Others

  • Join a small group or prayer gathering.

  • Pray with a friend or family member — even just for a few minutes.

  • There’s power and encouragement when we pray together (Matthew 18:20).

Listen and Be Still

  • Prayer isn’t just talking — it’s listening. After you pray, take a moment to be silent and ask God to speak to your heart (Psalm 46:10).

Tips for Staying Consistent

  • Set a reminder at the same time every day to pray.

  • Keep a prayer journal — write down what you pray for and how God answers.

  • Be honest and real. God isn’t looking for fancy words; He wants your heart.

Scriptures to Hold Onto

  • “Pray without ceasing.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:17

  • “Do not be anxious about anything… but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” – Philippians 4:6

  • “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” – James 5:16

Pick one of these to try this week:

  • Pray for 5 minutes every morning.

  • Choose one Psalm and pray it out loud.

  • Text a friend and ask how you can pray for them — then do it.

Over time, prayer will become more natural — not just something you do, but part of who you are.
