Day Thirty Four | Lent Devotional

Reading: Mark 9, Psalm 37:34

“Wait on the LORD, And keep His way, And He shall exalt you to inherit the land; When the wicked are cut off, you shall see it.”

The first followers of Jesus were not known by a denominational label or even by the term “Christian”.  They were simply known as those who followed “The Way”.  Even Paul, before his conversion, sought to persecute those “who were of The Way…” (Act 9:2).  Eight times the book of Acts uses this term to describe those who follow Jesus.

It is a fitting title.  To be a follower of Jesus meant choosing to live in "The Way” - aligning one's life with His teachings and example. Discipleship involved more than just saying a prayer or going to Church.  It meant that you would no longer live for your own pleasure, but for the honor and glory of God. Notice our reading instructs us to “Wait on the Lord and keep His Way…”.  This is not a passive waiting - but active engagement of the attention looking for The Lord to manifest His will..

To be a disciple is to choose an active apprenticeship under Jesus -  spending time in his presence, seeking to emulate his character, and navigating life according to his teaching. Discipleship is a call to continual growth and transformation.

By following Jesus' Way, we are assured that He will exalt us to inherit the land. This promise encompasses our elevation and the eventual downfall of the enemy who opposes us.

The story of Caleb in the Book of Joshua serves as a powerful illustration of trusting in God's timing and remaining steadfast in our commitment to His Way.. Throughout his life, Caleb believed God and followed  his commands. As a result, he enjoyed divine protection and lived a long and healthy life.

Caleb never wavered from following God's Way. In the end, not only did he receive his inheritance, but he also witnessed God’s justice. His life serves as a powerful reminder of the rewards that come from unwavering faith and obedience to God's will.

In your journal today, identify where you’re at in your apprenticeship to Jesus, which areas do you need to improve - become more like Him, spend more time with Him, or do more of what He did; And in what ways do you need to actively or passively wait on God?
