Day Thirty Eight | Lent Devotional
Reading: Mark 13, Psalm 37:38
“But the transgressors shall be destroyed together; The future of the wicked shall be cut off.”
In Mark 13, the Lord outlines a plan for the future of humanity: both the righteous, and the unrighteous. While the forces of wickedness will ultimately be removed from the universe, God’s great plan is to spend eternity demonstrating His incredible love towards those who trust Him.
Thinking about our promised future is a very important key to living our lives today. How we live today is a reflection of what we believe about our future. That is why it is essential to get both our identity and our promised trajectory, from what God has revealed in His Word. Here are some questions to consider;
First, How would you live today in light of the future the Lord has painted for you? To answer this you first need to know what God says about your identity and trajectory in His Word. These scriptures are a great place to get started.
2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
John 10:28 28
"And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.
Eph 2:5-7
“Even when we were dead in trespasses, He made us alive together with Christ …and raised [us] up together, and made [us] sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.”
Jeremiah 29:11
“For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Eph 1:13-14
“In Him…having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.”
His future for you is victorious, glorious, and filled with fulfilling works that he has planned for you!
The next question is, “what would you be doing differently today if you believed that?” How would you live today if you truly felt that God has something uniquely designed for you to do? How can you act in new ways today that demonstrates this?
The final question is, “what is in your way?” We all face obstacles in life. But the greatest obstacles are those that we create in our own minds. Satan is constantly working to cause you to doubt the truth of your identity in Christ. He wants to riddle you with fear of failure and loss. His greatest strategy is to intimidate you into inaction.
There are no obstacles that cannot be removed by the Lord. He is not preventing you from pursuing your dreams. If you know what God has gifted and called you to do, what is currently preventing you from taking action? Is it financial, relational, or personal? What would it take for you to tackle these obstacles fiercely by faith? When you are clear about your identity and future trajectory the imaginary obstacles that have been holding you back begin to dissolve. The future becomes flooded with hope.
In your journal today, write five “I am…” statements that are rooted in what God says about you in His Word. If you need some help, turn to the book of Ephesians and notice every statement that starts with the words, “in Him, In whom, In Christ”, etc. These statements identify who you are right now in the sight of God through Jesus Christ. For Example:
“I am the righteousness of God in Christ” 2 Cor 5:21
“I am more than a conqueror through Christ”. Romans 8:37
“I am chosen to be holy and without blame before Him.” Eph. 1:4
“I am sealed with the Holy Spirit of Promise” Eph 1:13
Finally, take a moment to worship and thank God for these realities. As you do, believe that they are true about you right now - regardless of your current feelings.
