Day Three | Lent Devotional
Reading: Luke 2, Psalm 37:3
In today's world, trust is a rare commodity. There was a time when business was conducted on a handshake and a person’s word. If someone broke their word, they were considered a pariah, and their reputation was “canceled”. Today, it’s hard to know who or what to trust. Businesses, institutions, media, governments, religious authorities, and most people regularly break their word with little or no consequences. Yet without trust, we can have no inner peace. We must anchor our hearts somewhere to function.
You can tell where someone puts their trust by examining where they go to find peace. Some people place their trust in their work, achievements, and careers. Others trust in money, shopping, and the accumulation of material things. Some trust in food, sex, alcohol, and other indulgences of the flesh. Some people trust in entertainment, sports, gaming, and doom, scrolling their lives away on their devices. While all these things have a place, none of them are capable of bringing us real peace. They may bring temporary pleasure and distraction, but if we turn to these things to relieve our anxiety, they will ultimately fail to deliver.
In Psalm 37:3, God invites us to trust in Him. The word “trust” means to “set your hope in”. He offers us a refuge for our hearts and the only reliable One in whom to place our hope. We trust in God by placing our faith in Jesus and the promises of His Word. When we trust Jesus, we don’t get worked up by the evil we see around us. When we trust in Jesus, we can endure setbacks, physical challenges, verbal assaults, financial pressure, and even personal failure. Because our hope is in Him to bring us through, we can have peace on the inside regardless of what rages on the outside.
Today, as you sit before the Lord, consider the earthly things you may be placing your trust in. Consider what you turn to: find peace instead on the Lord. Then, acknowledge this before Him and tell him that you are setting your hope in Him starting today.
