Day Thirteen | Lent Devotional
Reading: Luke 12, Psalm 37:12-13
The wicked plots against the just And gnashes at him with his teeth.
The Lord laughs at him, For He sees that his day is coming.
God laughs. Think about that for a moment. Most people associate the most powerful being in the universe with concepts like majesty, perfection, purity, and judgment. But according to our reading, God has a sense of humor, too. What’s worthy of our attention is what He finds so funny in this verse. The Psalmist states that the thing provokes God to giggle is when the enemy plots schemes against you and me! When he plans to assault our faith, trouble our loved ones, expose our failures or trap us in sin, it brings a smile to the Lord’s face. To be sure, God is not laughing at us. God’s laughter in the face of our adversaries signifies His awareness of all past, present, and future circumstances, contexts, and outcomes.
This laughter reflects God's fearlessness regarding your past, as He has already considered it and covered it with the Blood of His Son. God’s laughs because In the dynamic journey through your present and future life, He has already factored in every challenge you'll face and already has a counter-move. He has a plan for everything that concerns you. Thankfully, our Father is not a distant observer. He is actively present in your life right now, fighting for you, determined to complete the work that He began in you. Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit to guide us through life and help us gain victory over our current struggles. The Holy Spirit ensures we are not alone in navigating life's challenges.
Furthermore, God's ability to laugh at our enemy is grounded in His knowledge of your future. He knows precisely where you will be, what needs to happen, and when. His knowledge of what comes next includes a perfect awareness of every plan of the devil against you. This understanding allows the Lord to thwart our adversary and use his own assaults against him. The Lord laughs with joy at the certainty of His plans unfolding in your life. The laughter of God should be a source of comfort, assuring us that, regardless of the uncertainties, He is firmly in control. So the next time the devil whispers hopeless and fearful thoughts in your ears, just open your mouth and laugh along with God.
Today, as you pray, hold an image of the Lord laughing at the devil and his threats against you. Picture Him covering His mouth, doubled over, pointing dismissfully at the enemy, and howling from His belly. This is the picture God wants us to see.
In your journal, write a short list of ways you can begin to embrace life's challenges with a sense of humor. Trust that He is present with you, actively fighting for your well-being. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance and wisdom to navigate your current reality joyfully.
