Day Seven | Lent Devotional

Reading: Luke 6, Psalm 37:4

5 Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring [it] to pass.

We get to choose most of our paths in life's journey. While God has a plan for us, he allows us to choose our way. This requires us to seek Him for wisdom and guidance.  It means we must consider the paths we select and how we will live before Him.

Sometimes, we do our best to make good decisions but inadvertently choose a direction we regret later. When this happens, we re-evaluate our choices, reorient to our desired destination, and figure out a new way to get there.

At other times, we willfully choose to wander from God’s path. Like the prophet said, “We all like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his way…” (Isa. 53:6).  In these cases, we must be restored.

We also face an enemy who is committed to messing with us.  He entices us down promising paths that lead to dead ends and hidden dangers.  Satan does his best to confuse our sense of direction and threaten us along the way. King David described this reality when he wrote of walking through the “valley of the shadow of death” and sitting at a banquet table while “in the presence of my enemies.” (Psalm 23:4).

Thankfully, we have a Good Shepherd who watches over us. He chases away the wolves and has promised to go after us when we stumble or stray.  He never loses track of us.  There is never a place we may wander where we cannot be found and immediately rescued, re-oriented, and restored.  He has a GPS that knows our precise location, including our distance from Him and all dangers surrounding us.

When we feel lost on our way through life, He waits for us to call for His aid. The Holy Spirit is always ready to answer and direct our paths. He invites us to commit our way to Him, trusting that He will bring it to pass.

In your time with the Lord today, consider where you are in your “ways.”  Are you on a good path, or have you wandered? Where are you today in your finances, physical health, spiritual life, emotional well being, and key relationships?  Consider the possibility that you are where you are because of a path you have either chosen or neglected. Do you need to get reoriented in a new direction?  Do you need a new map?  Do you need a rescue?  Your Good Shepherd is waiting for your call.

Write a prayer in your journal, committing your paths to the Lord.  Ask Him to help you identify the wrong paths and reveal new ones to quickly get you back on track.  Then, listen for His response.  Wait for that still, small inner voice to speak to you.  Write what you hear. Plot out a new direction with practical steps you can begin implementing today. “Trust also in Him, and He will bring it to pass.”
