Day Twenty Three | Lent Devotional
Reading: Luke 22, Psalm 37:23
The steps of a [good] man are ordered by the LORD, And He delights in his way.
The bible has a lot to say about where we place our feet. Our steps can take us to both good places and bad. Job said “My foot has held fast to His steps; I have kept His way and not turned aside.” (Job 23:11). David prayed, “Uphold my steps in Your paths, that my footsteps may not slip.” (Psa 17:5), and, “Direct my steps by Your word, And let no iniquity have dominion over me.” (Psa 119:133). If we don’t take time to examine our steps we can find ourselves in some pretty unhappy places.
A step is a single movement forward in a particular direction. To move from one place to another we must aim our feet in the direction we desire and take steps. It could be said that the place we find ourselves in today is a result of the steps we chose to take yesterday. If we are not where we want to be in life, we need to look at the steps we’ve taken to arrive there. If we want to arrive at a new destination we must identify the direction we wish to go and be willing to take the steps necessary each day to move us towards that destination. It’s really that simple.
Sometimes in life we aren’t sure which steps to take to get where we want to be. Sometimes our flesh wants to walk in a very different direction than the way our spirit knows to go. The promise of Psalm 37:23 is that even when we don’t have 100% certainty about the path we are on, if we trust the Lord and keep moving forward, He will “order” our steps.
The Hebrew word used here is kun and it means to be set in a particular order, to be firmly placed in solid ground. When our hearts are seeking to follow the Lord He has promised to set our steps in the right order and place our feet on solid ground. As we travel along the Lord actually delights in our daily efforts to move in the right direction. And over time He will guide us to the center of His will for our lives.
As you pray today, take a moment to look at the steps you’ve recently taken. Where have you taken good steps? Where have you stepped in directions that you regret? Now look ahead to where you want to be. Where do you want to be spiritually, relationally, financially, in your career?
In your journal write down a simple list of the places you want to be that are different from where you are today. Ask the Lord to show you a specific step you can take today to move towards that desired place. Write it down.
Confess this out loud:
“The Lord is my guide. He lights my path and orders my steps. He guides me in the way I should go. He delights in my way. I bind my feet to the steps of the Lord, in the Name of Jesus Christ. I am His sheep, I hear His Voice, I always follow Him.”
