Day Fifteen | Lent Devotional

Reading: Luke 14, Psalm 37:16

A little that a righteous man has [Is] better than the riches of many wicked.

Today's passage teaches a powerful principle: that what you have is all you need. We see this illustrated in the story of Moses. When God called him to free the children of Israel from slavery, Moses initially doubted they would listen to him.  He felt his age, abilities and resources were insufficient to persuade them that God had spoken to him.

The Lord responded with a simple question: “So the LORD said to him, "What [is] that in your hand?" Moses replied, "A rod." (Ex. 4:2). God redirected Moses's focus to what was already in his hands as sufficient to do the job the Lord had called Him to do. When he threw down his rod God used it as a miraculous sign.  From that time forward Moses' staff was the key instrument in performing the miracles that were needed to liberate the children of God.

This theme is repeated over and over throughout the bible. God used the widow’s cup of flour and jar of oil to make enough bread to feed her family and the prophet through a long famine (1 Ki. 17:14). Jesus used Peter’s fishing boat to become a platform to both evangelize the crowd and call Peter to follow Him (Luke 5). God is saying something powerful through these stories.  When we focus on using what we have right now, God leverages it as a seed of multiplication. What you have is all you need

Navigating today's culture, we are flooded with messages emphasizing what we lack. This prevailing narrative encourages us to focus on what we don't have rather than appreciating what is already within our grasp. There may be many things that we need to accomplish the work God has put in our hearts. We may need money for paying off debts, savings to send our kids to college, and investment capital for our business idea. These are all legitimate.  But don’t think that you can’t move forward until the resources fully arrive.  What can you do with what you have right now? Focus gratefully on what the Lord has already placed in your hand, offer it before the Lord, and begin walking in the direction of your dreams.  Watch what the Lord will do. Because what you have is all you need.

  • As you sit before the Lord today, take a moment to reflect on what you may have overlooked or underutilized. Consider how these elements could be channels for God to bring about transformative change in your life.

  • Write a prayer to the Lord thanking Him for what He has given you and asking Him to use it for His Glory.
