Referenced Scriptures
Ephesians 5:18–20 – Be filled with the Spirit; speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs; giving thanks always to God.
2 Chronicles 16:9 – The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the earth to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose hearts are loyal to Him.
Romans 12:6–8 – The seven functional gifts: prophecy, serving, teaching, exhortation, giving with liberality, leadership with diligence, mercy with cheerfulness.
1 Corinthians 12:1–11 – The nine manifestation gifts of the Spirit.
1 Peter 4:10–11 – Each one has received a gift; minister it as a good steward of the grace of God. If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracle of God.
2 Timothy 1:6–7 – Stir up the gift of God which is in you; God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind.
Romans 11:29 – The gifts and callings of God are irrevocable.
2 Kings 3:15 – “Bring me a minstrel”; when the minstrel played, the hand of the Lord came upon the prophet.
Pastor Pascal’s Teaching – Functional Gifts (Romans 12)
Giving with Liberality – True givers give freely and trust God to provide resources. They are channels, not containers.
Leadership with Diligence – Real leaders stay the course, even when people complain or resist. They follow God’s vision, not popular opinion.
Mercy with Cheerfulness – Those with mercy see the end result. Joy comes from knowing they are part of someone’s restoration.
Illustration:
Seven people (each representing a functional gift) respond differently when a waitress drops a tray:
– Leadership: Directs others to help.
– Mercy: Comforts the waitress.
– Giving: Offers to pay for the loss.
– Exhortation: Encourages her that she’ll be okay.
– Teaching: Explains how to balance the tray next time.
– Serving: Quietly cleans up the mess.
– Prophecy: Declares God will use this for good.
Each person’s response reflects their God-given grace.
Referenced Series
Finding Your Gift – A 10-part teaching series by Pastor John Carter covering each of the seven functional gifts in depth.
Main Teaching – Pastor John Carter
1. Two Ways Spiritual Gifts Operate
– Occasional Manifestation: Temporary inspiration or “unction” when the Spirit moves.
– Resident (Endowed) Gift: A permanent, ongoing gift within the believer’s spiritual inventory.
2. Understanding Manifestation Gifts (1 Corinthians 12)
– Any believer can be used in these gifts as the Spirit wills.
– Some gifts may also become resident—given by God to regularly steward and use.
3. The Responsibility of Resident Gifts
– If a gift is resident in you, you have a duty to develop and use it.
– Don’t wait for God to “take over”—stir it up by faith and obedience.
– Example: The gift of prophecy can be both occasional and resident.
4. Personal Testimony
– Pastor John’s first experience with tongues at age 16 led to regular prophetic insight and words of knowledge.
– Learned under Kenneth Hagin that gifts operate “as the Spirit wills,” but later learned some are endowed to steward.
– Personal encounter: The Lord said, “I have given you the gift of prophecy. Use it.”
– Revelation from 1 Peter 4:10 confirmed that gifts are received and must be ministered.
5. Practical Use of Resident Gifts
– Pray for opportunities to minister (baby dedications, baptisms, prayer moments).
– Believe for the gift to activate rather than passively waiting.
– Gifts can be stirred by worship and music (see 2 Kings 3:15).
– Music helps create an atmosphere where gifts flow.
6. Stirring the Gift (2 Timothy 1:6–7)
– You are responsible to fan into flame what God has placed within you.
– Gifts may become dormant through distraction, discouragement, or fear—but they are never revoked.
– Stir them by faith, prayer, and intentional obedience.
7. Faith and Legacy
– Paul reminded Timothy of the generational faith passed from Lois and Eunice.
– Faith can be modeled and imparted through family and community.
– The same faith that once burned brightly can be rekindled.
8. Developing and Deploying Gifts
– Resident gifts must be discovered, developed, and deployed.
– Do not wait for perfect conditions; act when there is a need and an inward witness.
– Your responsibility is to believe for the manifestation, not to manufacture it.
Prophetic Instruction / Homework
• Ask the Lord to reveal what spiritual gifts He has placed within you.
• As you pray for someone, be aware of what comes up inside you (a scripture, picture, or impression).
• Step out in obedience to share what the Lord gives you.
• Stir up the gifts within you daily: “I stir up the gift that is in me.”
• Believe God to use you in the nine manifestation gifts as He wills.
• Don’t wait passively; be willing and responsive to the Spirit’s prompting.
• Parents: Pray over your children, lay hands on them, and listen for God’s insight.
• When God gives you a prompting (even in everyday moments like the grocery line), act on it.
Closing Exhortation & Prayer
“I stir up the gift that is in me.
I fan it into flame.
Gifts of God, come forth in my life.
Holy Spirit, use me according to Your will.”
Key Takeaway
The gifts of the Spirit are not distant or mysterious—they’re given to be used.
Some come occasionally by inspiration; others reside within you as part of your calling.
Your role is to stir them, believe for them, and faithfully use them to build the Body of Christ.
