Service

What It Is

Service is about loving God by loving people. It’s choosing to use your time, energy, and gifts to care for others — not because you have to, but because Jesus first served us.

When we serve, we reflect the heart of Christ, who came “not to be served, but to serve” (Mark 10:45). Service isn’t always big or public — often, it’s found in small, humble acts of kindness that show God’s love in real and practical ways.

Why It Matters

  • It reflects Jesus’ heart. Serving others is one of the clearest ways we become like Him.

  • It builds God’s kingdom. Every act of service — big or small — makes a difference in people’s lives.

  • It grows humility and love. Serving shifts our focus from ourselves to the needs of others.

  • It draws people to God. When we serve with joy and love, people see Jesus in us.

How to Practice Service

Here are simple ways to begin serving others in everyday life:

Serve Where You Are

  • Look for opportunities in your daily life: help a neighbor, encourage a coworker, or support a friend in need.

  • Small acts — a kind word, a meal, a ride — can have a huge impact.

Serve in the Church

  • Use your gifts to build up the church — volunteer on a team, greet people on Sundays, help with children’s ministry, or join a prayer group.

  • Every role matters. The church is healthiest when everyone plays their part (1 Corinthians 12:4–7).

Serve in the Community

  • Look for local ways to meet needs — volunteer at a food pantry, mentor a student, or participate in outreach events.

  • Service isn’t about being noticed — it’s about being faithful.

Serve Secretly

  • Do something kind without anyone knowing — pay for someone’s meal, leave a note of encouragement, or help someone anonymously.

  • These “hidden” acts of service shape your heart and honor God deeply (Matthew 6:1–4).

Tips for Staying Consistent

  • Start small — one act of service a week can grow into a lifestyle.

  • Ask God each morning, “Who can I serve today?”

  • Remember, it’s not about perfection — it’s about availability.

Scriptures to Hold Onto

  • “Through love serve one another.” – Galatians 5:13

  • “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others…” – 1 Peter 4:10

  • “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve…” – Mark 10:45

Start Here:

  • Volunteer in a church ministry or outreach.

  • Look for one person you can serve in a practical way this week.

  • Do one anonymous act of kindness and pray for the person who receives it.

Service turns our faith outward. It’s how we become the hands and feet of Jesus — loving, giving, and lifting others so they can see the heart of God through us.
